Sugar-free energy drink: what it is and how to choose one
What is a sugar-free energy drink, what is it sweetened with, and what to look for on the label to choose yours: sugar, caffeine, calories, carbonation, and price per serving.
A sugar-free energy drink is what more and more people are looking for when they want the caffeine from an energy drink without the amount of sugar found in classic cans. But "sugar-free" doesn't tell the whole story: there are big differences in caffeine, sweeteners, format, and price. In this guide, we'll tell you exactly what it is and how to choose one without making a mistake.
What is a sugar-free energy drink?
It is a drink with caffeine (and usually other ingredients such as taurine, amino acids, or vitamins) in which the sweetness does not come from sugar, but from sweeteners. On the nutritional table, you'll see it in the "sugars" line: it should say 0 g or a minimal amount.
They come in cans, ready to drink, and in powder form, to mix with water. The latter have grown the most in recent years because they are cheaper per drink and allow you to adjust the intensity of the flavor.
Why choose a sugar-free version?
The main reason is the amount. According to the OCU energy drink comparison, a classic large 473 ml can contains about 55 g of sugar and 230 kcal. The World Health Organization recommends that free sugars do not exceed 10% of daily energy intake, and considers that lowering it to 5% (about 25 g a day for an adult) provides additional benefits. A single can already exceeds that figure.
If you drink energy drinks often, for studying, working, or training, that difference is noticeable at the end of the month. That's why it makes sense to switch to a sugar-free version.
What is a sugar-free energy drink sweetened with?
Sweeteners. The most common are sucralose (E-955), acesulfame K (E-950), or aspartame (E-951). All are authorized in the European Union, which sets an acceptable daily intake for each after evaluation by the EFSA. Z Drinks Energy, for example, uses sucralose.
In terms of flavor, what matters is how the sweetness is balanced. A good sugar-free energy drink should not leave that chemical aftertaste that makes you stop drinking it halfway.
How to choose a sugar-free energy drink: what you need to look at
1. Sugars on the nutritional table
Don't rely solely on the front label. Look at the table: "carbohydrates, of which sugars". In a real sugar-free energy drink, it should say 0 g.
2. Caffeine per serving
This is the most important piece of information and the one that is looked at the least. It can range from 80 mg to over 300 mg depending on the product and size. If a drink exceeds 150 mg per liter, the law requires it to state "High caffeine content" on the label and that it is not recommended for children or pregnant women. Choose a dose that fits what you consume daily: the EFSA considers that up to 400 mg daily and 200 mg in a single serving do not pose safety problems for healthy adults.
3. Calories
Sugar-free does not always mean zero calories, but it usually stays very low. In Z Drinks Energy, it is about 5 kcal per serving, depending on the flavor.
4. Whether it is carbonated or not
For many people, carbonation feels heavy, especially if they drink quickly or while training. Powdered energy drinks are not carbonated.
5. Price per drink
Always compare the price per serving, not per container. A 70-serving container of Z Drinks Energy costs €0.57 per drink.

Frequently asked questions
Does a sugar-free energy drink have calories?
Very few. Since it does not contain sugar, the calories come from small amounts of other ingredients. In Z Drinks Energy, it is about 5 kcal per serving, depending on the flavor.
Are sweeteners safe?
The sweeteners used in Europe are authorized by the European Union after evaluation by the EFSA, which sets an acceptable daily intake for each. Used in the amounts of a drink, they are within those margins.
Does sugar-free mean less caffeine?
No. Sugar and caffeine have nothing to do with each other. A sugar-free drink can contain the same caffeine or more than a regular one, so always look at the milligrams per serving.
How many can I take a day?
It depends on the caffeine in each one and the rest of the caffeine you consume (coffee, tea, colas). The EFSA sets the safe limit at 400 mg a day for healthy adults. With Z Drinks Energy, 200 mg per serving, that is two servings if you don't consume anything else with caffeine. It is not recommended for children or pregnant or breastfeeding women.
